Personal Information

Associate Professor Anthony Kwan is a Vitreoretinal surgeon with an academic interest and the Director of Vitreoretinal Service at the Queensland Eye Institute.

He specialises in retinal and macular diseases e.g. age related macular degeneration, epiretinal membrane (macular pucker, cellophane maculopathy), macular hole, diabetic retinopathy (eye disease in diabetes mellitus), and retinal detachment. He performs cataract operations with intraocular lens implantations and vitrectomy operation privately at South Bank Day Hospital, Queensland Eye Institute (Brisbane), John Flynn Hospital (Tugun), and Mater Adult Hospital – (intermediate/private but uninsured patients) (Brisbane).

He adopts a holistic approach to patient care and has a reputation for passion in his work and ability to communicate well with patients, and he always finds time to speak to his patients and their family.

He received his schooling and medical training in England, and ophthalmology training in London. He attended the famous Jesuit boarding school in England, Stonyhurst College, which has connections with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (author of Sherlock Holmes) and J.R.R. Tolkien (author of the Lord of the Rings). He spent over 10 years at the largest specialist eye hospital in the world, Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. This training equipped him to deal with both routine and complex retinal diseases. Dr Kwan is always happy to deal with retinal emergencies like wet age-related macular degeneration and retinal detachment.

Dr Kwan has extensive experience in research and is internationally known for his work in experimental retinal transplantation. He obtained his research-based Doctor of Medicine (MD) on the subject of retinal transplantation from the Institute of Ophthalmology at the University of London. Between research and clinical care, Dr Kwan devotes himself to the education of junior doctors and he was an examiner for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO).

He has published in national and international clinical ophthalmology and scientific journals. He has received grants from Ophthalmic Research Institute Australia (ORIA), NHMRC (Australia) and Macular Disease Foundation Australia (MDFA). He previously held the position of the Head of the Ophthalmology Department at Mater Hospital, Brisbane. He was also a past Chair of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retinal Specialists. He has been a medical advisor to many Australian medical industrial companies include Alcon, Bayer, Novartis, and Roche. He is a medical committee member of the Macular Disease Foundation Australia. In 2020, Dr Kwan was appointed Chair of the Macular Disease Foundation Australia’s Research Committee.

He conducts clinical trials on macula and retina related diseases at the Queensland Eye Institute.
