Skin lesions, that appear as small lumps on or around the eyelids, are common.
We advise that you arrange for someone to drive you home after the treatment.

The Procedure

The removal of small skin lesions (lumps) on and around the eyelid is performed in the treatment room, in the practice.

You will be seated on a comfortable chair which is reclined to provide suitable access for the procedure.

Local anaesthetic eyedrops are provided to prevent ocular irritation and a dilute iodine solution is applied to the treated area to reduce the risk of infection.

A surgical marker is used to identify the treatment area and a local anaesthetic is injected.

This not only ensures comfort for the patient but also reduces the bleeding during and after the procedure.

Small lesions will not require sutures (stitches). However, if the lesion is larger there may be a number of small sutures in the skin that will be removed after a week.
Antibiotic ointment is applied to the treated area and usually a paraffin gauze and eye pads are applied to provide pressure and support. The dressing will stay on overnight and can be removed the next morning. The gauze stops the dressing from sticking to the skin and can easily be removed without any discomfort.

The eyelids may be cleaned with a sterile gauze pad or cotton ball and water (boiled water that has cooled).

In most cases you will be provided with a prescription for antibiotic ointment to apply to the treated area three times daily for 5 days.
Once the dressing has been removed, on the morning after the procedure, the area must be left open and kept dry. Do not cover it with another pad or dressing.

The excised lesion may be placed in a specimen pot and sent for histology, in which case you will return after a week to review the results.
